Restoring Our Local Economy

Dear Friend,

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to once again visit with hardworking employees, business owners, seniors, and students across our Central Florida communities. The narrative I hear from these important conversations continues to remain centered around the need for economic expansion, job creation in our neighborhoods, and increasing personal financial security. People are still hopeful, but they recognize that not enough is being done to move ahead to make sure we can achieve these important goals to get our country back on track.

I believe there are four action items that lawmakers should and could implement immediately and collaboratively to turn our economy around:

1 - Provide certainty to families and businesses. Taking looming tax hikes off the table and providing a simple and straightforward tax code would allow families and small business owners to plan ahead and set their budgets and bottom lines with confidence. Families and small businesses cannot afford the tax increases included in the President’s proposal.

2 – Offer initiatives that spur economic expansion and job-growth. The One New Employee (ONE) Act that I sponsored would encourage small business owners through a tax incentive to hire one new employee. If every small business across the country hired just one new employee, our unemployment rate would drop to 5%. Another initiative I have co-sponsored, the Creating Home Ownership Opportunities Act, would provide individuals and couples looking to save for a down payment for a home the opportunity to achieve this American Dream through a tax-free account. Getting rid of unnecessary government red-tape, through the REINS Act, would also help businesses thrive and hire.

3 – Stop wasteful Washington spending. Moving towards a balanced budget is a critical element to a prosperous nation; you can’t have one without the other. We must cut current wasteful spending, cap future spending, and quickly send a Balanced Budget Amendment to the states for ratification. Each lawmaker must also lead by example. This year, I advanced a proposal that would save taxpayers $2.4 billion, ultimately leading to passage of an amendment I sponsored to help us achieve these savings. If every Member of Congress found and passed significant savings, we could easily save $1 trillion. Repealing the President’s federal takeover of healthcare is an important part of reducing our debt and ensuring that Central Florida residents have the care they need, from the doctor they choose, at a price they can afford.

4 – Create American energy with American workers. I don’t have to tell you that the price at the pump is sky high – you see it each time you fill up and as it eats into your monthly and yearly budget. We need an all-of-the-above energy policy that creates American energy here at home with American workers. Approval of the Keystone XL pipeline would immediately create 120,000 jobs while ensuring the safe delivery of an estimated 1 million barrels of oil each day from our ally, Canada, rather than the increasingly volatile Middle East. Instead, the President failed to lead by rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline and the jobs and energy security that come with it.

Recently, a constituent contacted our office concerning an immigration issue. Thankfully our office was able to intervene on the family’s behalf, and they shared, “We want to thank you so much for all you’ve done for us and help you provides through the process. It was you that made it happen and we are very grateful."
