440th Airlift Wing
The 440th Airlift Wing, Air Force Reserve Command, is located at Pope Air Force Base, Fayetteville, N.C., and adjacent to Fort Bragg. The 16 C-130H transport aircraft assigned to the 440th provide the primary tactical airlift support for the troops of the XVIII Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne Division located at Fort Bragg.

The mission of the wing is to maintain operational readiness for the airlift of tactical units, airborne units, personnel, supplies, and equipment into prepared or unprepared areas by landing or airdrop. The peacetime and wartime mission of the 440th Airlift Wing is global in scope.

440th Airlift Wing History
The 440th Airlift Wing has a long and distinguished history. It was formed in 1943 at Baer Field in Indiana, but has been based at General Mitchell International Airport - Air Reserve Station since 1957. The airport and Air Reserve Station are both named in honor of Brig. Gen. William Mitchell, the Milwaukee native who is considered to be the "father" of the modern Air Force.
