AmCham France BIAC Report on Promoting Women’s Economic Empowerment
AmCham France co-authored a report with the BIAC (Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD) which was presented at the 2012 OECD Forum. The report, “Putting all our minds to work: harnessing the gender dividend”, demonstrates the significant economic benefits of promoting women’s economic empowerment. The report includes a ‘toolkit’ for action, based on the experience of business and governments around the globe.
The key findings of the report indicate that there is no single panacea to attaining gender balance. To fully leverage the potential of female talent, several success factors must be aligned: visible commitment from top leadership, integration of gender diversity into business strategy, accountability throughout the organization, measureable goals, robust development programs for women and flexible and gender-neutral organizational practices.
Sodexo, an AmCham member company, is an example of progress achieved by implementing a comprehensive gender diversity strategy and aligning it to their business goals. Sodexo committed to achieving 25% representation of women amongst group senior leaders (their Top 300) by 2015; and since 2008, this percentage has already climbed from 16% to 20%. As Jean-Michel Monnot, European Director for Diversity at Sodexo explained, ‘For us it is a performance objective, this is why we have developed several concrete initiatives across the globe lead by SWIFT (Sodexo Women’s International Forum for Talent).”
Responding to demand from its member companies, the American Chamber of Commerce regularly brings top executives from its member companies around the table to discuss female talent and the corporate gender divide. The American Chamber of Commerce in France has recently joined a coalition of Business Schools and pan-European institutions to support Commissioner Viviane Reding’s initiative on ‘Board-Ready Women’.
