Lost/Stolen/Expired Legal Permanent Resident Card

If you are a Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) of the United States and your residency card (commonly known as “green card”) is lost, stolen, or expires during your brief vacation in Mexico you may be able to apply for a travel document. This service is not for U.S. citizens, however, to manage workload and facilitate access to the Consulate building we use the American Citizen Services appointment website. There is no cost to make an appointment.

Who can apply for a LPR travel document in Merida after the green card is lost or stolen or expires?

  • The green card was valid (unexpired) at the time it was lost/stolen OR the green card expired shortly after you departed the United States;
  • You have been outside of the United States for less than one year.
  • You have no criminal record and no prior problems with U.S. immigration.
  • There are no other complicated aspects to your case. For example, we do not accept cases of parolees with a lost/stolen parole letter, a conditional resident with an about-to-expire green card who still has to interview with DHS for permanent resident status, a conditional resident who interviewed for permanent resident status and is awaiting arrival of a new green card, etc.
  • It is at the consular officer’s discretion what cases will or will not be accepted in Merida.

Required steps to apply for a travel document to return to the United States:

  1. Obtain a police report at the nearest Mexican police station (Ministerio Público) to where the loss/theft occurred.
  2. Visit the ACS Appointment System to schedule an appointment. From the list of services you should select “Request notarial and other services not listed above.” See below in yellow:
