On Sunday, February 26, local Arabic daily Al Bilad printed an exclusive interview with U.S. Ambassador Thomas C. Krajeski. The interview was published along with the following statement by Ambassador Krajeski:

The United States of America and the Kingdom of Bahrain enjoy a longstanding alliance based on shared values, shared interests, mutual respect and partnership.  Our countries’ friendship dates back to the earliest days of the 20th century with the establishment of the American Missionary Hospital in Manama, and evolved into an economic partnership, and then a security cooperation with the arrival of the American Navy in the 1940s.  For over one hundred years, our governments have worked together to address regional and global challenges.  Our bilateral relationship has not only helped to promote security and stability in the Arabian Gulf, but has also contributed to economic, social, political and cultural benefits for the people of both countries.  I am proud to say that over 500 Bahrainis from all sectors of society have participated in academic, cultural or professional exchange programs offered by the U.S. government.  These include ministers, Shura Council members, government officials, journalists, private sector employees, and others.  Bahrain is among the United States’ strongest partners in the region and it is an honor and privilege to serve as the United States’ ambassador here.

In light of the events of the past year, it is more important than ever that our governments work together to confront local and regional challenges, and to promote meaningful reform and reconciliation here in Bahrain.  Both of our countries benefit from stability and prosperity in Bahrain, and from a society where all people are able to contribute to the political process.  We also must stand together to confront growing regional threats, not the least of which from Iran.

As we have said time and again, it is a great credit to His Majesty King Hamad that he initiated the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry and that the government of Bahrain has taken many important steps toward implementing the reforms identified in the BICI report.  Still, there is work to be done.  As such, we renew our call on all parties, including the government, political societies and others to engage in dialogue and negotiation in which all elements of society have a real voice. This must be a process led by Bahrainis themselves. It will require courage and leadership on all sides, and can only succeed by building mutual respect and mutual trust.

The United States stands ready to support you as a friend and partner, with respect and appreciation for the role that Bahrainis have played in advancing the values shared by our two great nations.
