Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Judith A. McHale visited Bahrain from November 5-8, highlighting the necessity of people-to-people exchanges, the need for a strong civil society, and the importance of engaging with and providing opportunities for youth.

"Cultural exchanges between the United States and Bahrain are critically important and must be strengthened and expanded.  I firmly believe that the more we understand one another, the more we can build bridges between our two societies.  Our dialogues must be a two-way conversation.  Not only do we need to increase Bahrainis' understanding of the United States, we must find ways to further Americans' connections with their counterparts in Bahrain."

During her visit to Bahrain, Undersecretary McHale met with Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Minister of Education Dr. Majed bin Ali Al Noaimi, Minister of Social Development Dr. Fatima Al-Balooshi, CEO of the Economic Development Board and Chairman of Tamkeen Shaikh Mohammed bin Isa Al Khalifa, and Undersecretary for Culture Dr. Isa Ameen.

Additionally, Undersecretary McHale met with civil society leaders and human rights activists in Bahrain.

"Bahrain has a vibrant and very vocal civil society, and we are exploring ways that we can further the efforts of the numerous non-governmental organizations in the country."

Lastly, Undersecretary McHale conducted a town hall meeting with approximately 100 students from the University of Bahrain, during which she spoke about continued cooperation on public diplomacy initiatives, the importance of civil society development, and entrepreneurship and academic opportunities for the country's young people.  She encouraged students to pursue their dreams and to not give up when faced with challenges.

"Challenges make you stronger and allow you to learn from your mistakes.  Choose to pursue something that you care about passionately and continue to follow your passion.  Look for new opportunities, be ready to adapt to an ever-changing world, and keep moving forward."
