Companies spend millions of dollars probing allegations of bribery and also to avoid having to investigate in the first place. Many have added compliance committees to corporate boards, created compliance and ethics departments headed by former government officials and, in some instances, added costly processes to daily operations to make sure money isn’t changing hands improperly overseas. Three companies: Avon Products Inc., Weatherford International Ltd. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., that have spend about a half a billion dollars combined on internal investigations.

Apparel industry requests condinuation of 275-day grace period for paying import duties on inputs

One draft requires firms to pay tax before customs clearance, or provide a guarantee from a bank before they can secure the 275-day grace period on duty payment. The second draft proposed by the ministry bans the grace period altogether.

The focus needs to remain on structural reforms” said Tomoyuki Kimura, ADB Country Director for Vietnam. “A government commitment to a credible reform roadmap with time-bound actions should revive lending and improve market confidence.”
