State (STATEMAP) and Education (EDMA) funds are distributed through annual competitive grants programs that require matching funds from the applying States or universities. Federal (FEDMAP) funds also are distributed through a review process that includes external stakeholders such as other Federal agencies and the American Association for State Geologists. Although the National Geologic Mapping Act authorizes up to $64 million for the Program each year, Congress has enacted between $20 and $30 million. The distribution of these funds among the three components is determined by a formula.
