The Solar Corona and Venus before Sunrise over the Moon

The color-enhanced picture shown above was made by a startracker camera aboard the Clementine spacecraft. The lunar surface on the right was illuminated by sunlight reflected from Earth. The solar corona in the center, which is so faint that it is visible to the eye only during total solar eclipses, dominates the image. Venus, on the right, is so bright that its image overflowed into neighboring pixels to make it look unusually large in this sensitive camera. A few stars, which the startracker used to determine Clementine's orientation, are also visible in the picture.
