The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is the largest commitment ever by a single nation toward an international health initiative. PEPFAR was initially conceived as a 5-year, US$15 billion comprehensive approach to mitigating HIV/AIDS worldwide. Owing to its success, PEPFAR was reauthorized in 2008 with a commitment of about US$48 billion.

PEPFAR is the cornerstone and the largest component of President Barack Obama’s Global Health Initiative (GHI).  The goal of GHI is to save the greatest number of lives by building on proven interventions and supporting partner countries’ to improve their healthcare systems. GHI envisions country-driven programs and the contextualization of HIV/AIDS within a broader health and development framework. Find out more about Global Health Initiative (GHI).

Through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), Zambia has been allocated US$276 million (ZMK 1.3 trillion) for 2010 and has received US$1.4 billion since inception in 2004 for prevention, treatment, and care and support programs.

The Government of the Republic of Zambia and the U.S. Government signed a Partnership Framework, which represents joint collaboration to achieve Zambia's five-year objective: a nation free from the threat of HIV and AIDS.  The Framework outlines national priorities and roles and responsibilities in the effort.  Learn more about the Partnership Framework.
