Welcome to the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad!

The Consular Section provides many services, including issuing visas. A visa allows you to travel to the United States and apply for admission; it does not guarantee entry. An immigration inspector at the port of entry determines your eligibility for admission into the United States.

What Types of Visas Are Available?

• Temporary Visitor (nonimmigrant) visas for tourism, business, work, or study.
•  Immigrant Visas to live in the U.S. permanently.
• Special Immigrant Visas for people who worked on behalf of the U.S. Government to live in the U.S. permanently.

Who Needs a Visa?

All Iraqi citizens require specific documentation to enter the United States.  Usually, this is a visa.

Travelers holding dual citizenship with the United States may not receive a visa, and must enter the United States using their American passport.

If you are a student or exchange visitor wishing to travel soon, or if you need urgent medical care in the United States, you may request an expedited appointment by contacting the Nonimmigrant Visa (NIV) Unit.

 Are There Other Options for Iraqi Nationals to Enter the United States?

Iraqi nationals may wish to consider applying for refugee status under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.  This is a different path to immigration to the U.S., and is not handled by the Consular Section.
