English Language Teaching Programs
The U.S. Embassy seeks to improve English language learning and promote the effective use of English as a medium of global communication in Malaysia. Our activities also help to foster mutual understanding between Americans and Malaysians. For more information, please click here.
Some of the programs and services offered include:
The English Language Fellow program provides American professional expertise in teaching English as a Foreign Language by sending American experts on ten-month fellowships to overseas academic institutions. The English Language Specialist program recruits American academics in the field of TESOL for short-term (two-six week) assignments abroad.
The English Access Microscholarships program provides a foundation of English language skills to non-elite, 14 - 18 year old students worldwide through afterschool classes and intensive summer learning activities. Access students gain an appreciation for American culture and democratic values, increase their ability to participate successfully in the socio-economic development of their countries, and gain the ability to compete for and participate in future U.S. exchange and study programs.
Since its inception in 2004, approximately 44,000 students in more than 55 countries have participated in the Access Program. This program in Malaysia is now in its third year.
The E-Teacher Scholarship program offers seven innovative, on-line, graduate level classes to English teaching professionals abroad through two different U.S. universities. The courses introduce the most recent English language teaching methods and techniques, offer the opportunity to engage in an innovative distance-learning program that employs the latest in modern technology, and provide direct access to U.S. experts with whom participants might not normally have the opportunity to interact. The E-Teacher Scholarship Program is open to candidates worldwide. All participants must be nominated through the U.S. Embassy.
The Fulbright English Teaching Assistants program: The State Government of Terengganu funds about a dozen American English Teaching Assistants in selected schools for a year. They assist Malaysian teachers as native speakers of the English language. The U.S. Government funds their international airfare.
VOA Special English: The Voice of America Special English program communicates by radio in clear and simple English with people whose native language was not English. Special English programs helps people learn American English while they learn about American life and stay informed about world news and developments in science. It provides listeners with information they cannot find elsewhere.
English Teaching Forum is a quarterly journal by the U.S. Department of State for teachers of English as a foreign or second language. Over 82,000 copies of the magezeine are distributed in more than 125 countries. For Forum articles dating back to 1993, please click here.
