U.S. Embassy in Suva, Fiji, alerts U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to the Republic of Fiji that the Joint Typhoon Warning Center has issued a Cyclone Evan warning. You are urged to locate shelter, monitor media reports, and follow all official instructions. Cyclone Evan, will affect Fiji for the next several days. At 1:00 a.m., Dec. 17, 2012, local time the centre of Tropical Cyclone Evan was located by radar and satellite image about 100km due north of Labasa on Vanua Levu Island. This cyclone is sustaining Category 4 intensity, with winds near the centre gusting over 230kmph. Cyclone Evan is moving WSW at 25kmph and is expected to be about 100km NNE of Nadi on Viti Levu Island at midday Dec. 17. Nadi International Airport is open but all inbound and outbound international flights have been delayed or cancelled until conditions improve. The U.S. Embassy is currently only open for emergency U.S. Citizen Services due to Cyclone Evan. If you are a U.S. Citizen with an emergency please call the Embassy at any time on 331-4466 and the duty officer will be contacted. Visa applicants may reschedule their appointment at http://suva.usembassy.gov/ or by emailing consularsuva@state.gov. We urge U.S. citizens to consult the Fiji Meteorological Service’s website for the latest weather information.
You should protect your travel and identity documents against loss or damage, as the need to replace lost documentation could delay or otherwise complicate your return to the United States. Secure your travel documents, (e.g. U.S. passport, birth certificate, picture IDs, etc.) by placing them in a safe, waterproof location or carry the documents with you. Tell family and friends in the United States of your whereabouts, and keep in close contact with your tour operator, hotel staff, and local officials for information about the flooding, including possible evacuation and shelter information.
U.S. citizens in Fiji are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security update messages and makes it easier for the Embassy to contact you in case of emergency. These messages are placed on our website at the same time that they are sent via email to STEP enrollees. If you do not have internet access, you may enroll in person at the U.S. Embassy.
