JOB SUMMARY:

The United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General's (USPS OIG) mission is to provide reports to Postal Service Executives, the Board of Governors, and Congress to help the Postal Service maximize revenues (over $65 billion a year), minimize costs, and prevent and detect fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement.

  

The USPS OIG is seeking students enrolled in ABA accredited law schools to fill one vacant Student Cooperative position in the Office of General Counsel located in Arlington, VA. The successful candidate will assist attorneys who give legal advice in diverse legal matters, including: employment, labor, contracting and procurement, federal appropriations, criminal, ethics, public sector civil litigation, audits, and other Inspector General matters.  The Student Cooperative Program is available for continuous employment throughout the year, while in school.

 

Candidates will be evaluated on the skills that they possess that are directly related to the duties of the position and/or the experience, education and training that indicate the applicant's ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. Only those candidates who meet all qualification and eligibility requirements and who submit a complete application package by 11:59 PM EST on Monday, February 25, 2013 will be considered.

 

The USPS OIG uses a Pay Banding system, which is equivalent to the Federal GS scale. Grade and salary determinations will be made based upon a candidate's education and professional experience.

 

This position is being advertised at the Administrative Band level. The salary range for this position is $17/hour. Locality Pay is authorized.

The following description of major duties and responsibilities is only intended to give applicants a general overview of the expectations.  The employee performs specialized administrative duties with continuing responsibility for projects, questions, or problems that arise in the area of assignment/curriculum.  Each assignment typically consists of a series of related actions or decisions prior to final completion.

 

Perform legal research and draft memoranda on diverse legal matters, including: employment, labor, contracting, procurement, federal appropriations, criminal, ethics, public sector civil litigation, audits,  and other Inspector General matters.

 

  • Assist attorneys in developing and reviewing policies and procedures
  • Advise clients (with the supervision of licensed attorneys)
  • Perform administrative tasks involving subpoena issuance, contracting, employee relations, and compliance with ethics law
  • Provide litigation assistance

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

You must meet ALL of the minimum requirements.

 

  • Students must be currently enrolled full or part-time in an ABA accredited law school, classified or academically ranked by semester hours as a First or Second year student, and must be "in good standing" with law school. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPT STATING CURRENT ENROLLMENT STATUS AND IN GOOD STANDING)

 

  AND

  •  Must permanently reside or be enrolled in a college or university located within a 50 mile radius of the office location
