Shipwreck Beach on Mutsu Bay

Shipwreck Beach lies at the southern end of the west coast of the Shimokita Peninsula. That's north of Misawa on Mutsu Bay. There are no amenities there but it's a good way to spend a few hours walking the beach.

Directions

  • Exit base out Falcon (POL) Gate. Turn left at first stop light.
  • Proceed to Circle K on R at second stop light. Turn left (north)
  • Continue for a long time until this road intersects with Hwy 338 at the top of Lake Ogawara. Turn left (north) on Hwy 338
  • Continue on Hwy 338 until you reach another Circle K on the left at a stop light. Turn Left on to Hwy 5. Follow Hwy 5 until it T's with Hwy 279 on Mutsu Bay.
  • You will turn R on Hwy 279 (north). Pass through two or three small villages. Look for a large green fence on the left with large white mounds of Hotate (Scallop) shells. Some turn into this fenced area. Some turn left directly after the fence. Both places have roads that lead to the Shipwrecks.
  • If you miss these two areas near the green fence, you will reach a dirt parking area on the right, directly before Hwy 279 crosses RR tracks. This parking area serves as a nice place to leave a car if you want to walk the beach one way from the shipwrecks.
