The travel and contact information you provide when you sign up will make it easier for a consular officer to assist you in case of an emergency, whether it be replacing a lost or stolen passport, in the event of a natural disaster or when family or friends in the United States are having problems trying to contact you with important news.  You only need to sign up once, and then you can add or delete your trips from your account easily.   STEP – the safe way to travel!
