E-Government

In compliance with the E-Government Act of 2002, the State Department is developing and continuing to enhance several website features to improve customer service.

  1. In support of the Digital Government Strategy and improved customer service, the State Department is moving forward on making its web content mobile friendly:
    • A mobile solution is being piloted now with 15 Embassy and Consulate websites around the world. Full rollout to more than 450 embassy and consulates websites is scheduled for early 2013. The mobile solution is device agnostic, which means all visitors accessing the site from a feature phone, smart phone, or tablet will be served an optimized version of the site, and will be given the option to view the “desktop” version if they desire.
    • m.state.gov provides the most popular categories of information from www.state.gov via any hand-held device. New categories of information have been added in FY12. A full redesign of www.state.gov to include making all content mobile friendly and device agnostic is planned for FY13.
  2. To assist users in finding content on State Department websites, faceted search has been deployed and continues to be enhanced. This more targeted search feature allows users to fine-tune search terms to more easily navigate through ever-growing content collections. To take advantage of faceted search, see the "Browse by" option in the upper right corner of every www.state.gov page.
  3. www.state.gov launched My State Department to give users the option of tailoring content to the categories of information in which they’re most interested.
  4. Apps for mobile devices:
    • "Smart Traveler" for iPhone and Android is for U.S. travelers going abroad. More»
    • "State Reader" for iPhone puts the latest in foreign policy news and video at your fingertips.
