Visitors Registering for Travel
The Embassy urges all American citizens, even those visiting Senegal or Guinea-Bissau for a short time, to register with the Embassy's Consular Section. In the event of an emergency, the Embassy will provide information and other critical assistance to American citizens.
Registration is the only way to guarantee that the Embassy is aware of your presence in the country and is able to contact you and assist you in such circumstances.
Americans who provide an email address when they register will receive the Consular Section's monthly newsletter and Consular Warden Messages by email. If you would like to receive messages at an additional email address, please sign up here.
How to Register
If you are an American citizen living or traveling in Senegal or Guinea-Bissau, the U.S. State Department and the Embassy in Dakar strongly encourage you to register your trip on the State Department’s travel registration website.
Registering your trip allows Embassies abroad to send you newsletters and time-sensitive travel warnings and public announcements specific to the areas in which you will be traveling or living. The information you provide also makes it easier for Embassies to contact you in case of emergency, or to contact your family or friends in the United States in the event of an emergency abroad.
To register follow the steps at Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Please note that you must create an account in order to register.
When you register, make sure you register as a long-term traveler even though you plan to stay in Senegal less than six months. This will ensure that your information is transferred to our local database and we can contact you via e-mail. If you have already registered online, please ensure that your registration and travel plans are current. You may update your contact information on the Internet at any time. The data you provide is secured behind Department of State firewalls, accessible only by cleared personnel in Embassies, Consulates, and the Department of State, and releasable only under the provisions of the Privacy Act.
Americans without Internet access may register in person at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Note: Effective September 6, 2011 all routine consular services at the U.S. Embassy Dakar, Senegal will be provided by APPOINTMENT ONLY to all U.S. citizens visiting or residing in Senegal or Guinea-Bissau. There will no longer be walk-in hours for routine consular services. Emergency cases (such as medical emergencies, deaths or arrests involving American citizens) will still be handled on a walk-in basis during normal Embassy hours, or after hours by calling the Embassy duty officer.

American Citizens who need emergency services are welcome to come during normal U.S. Embassy hours which are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
