Community-Level Planning Links

Links to information about promoting energy efficiency and conservation in communities.

Follow the links below to learn how tribal government agencies and organizations can promote energy efficiency and conservation in tribal communities.

  • Technical Assistance to State and Local Officials: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Technical Assistance Program provides state and local officials with access to experts who can assist in the development of energy efficiency policies and programs. The Web site provides information on how to apply for assistance, example projects, and related resources.
  • Federal Weatherization Assistance Program: The DOE Weatherization Assistance Program provides financial support to low-income families to implement weatherization technologies. This Web site provides information about weatherization technologies, related state-level programs, and how to apply for assistance. A related web page provides information about Weatherization in Indian Country.
  • Denali Commission: The Denali Commission provides critical utilities, infrastructure, and economic support through interagency and private sector cooperation in Alaska. The Energy Program funds some energy cost reduction programs.
  • State-by-State Guide to Energy Efficiency Incentive Programs: This Web site provides access to the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) which contains information searchable on a state-by-state basis on existing state, local, private, and utility programs which provide incentives for implementation of energy efficiency measures for both buildings and vehicles.
  • Energy Building Codes: This DOE State Energy Program maintains a Web site with general information on energy building codes, state-by-state energy code requirements and programs, and case studies on energy building code success stories. The related Building Energy Codes Program provides information on model energy codes and code compliance evaluation tools.
  • Energy Efficiency in Indian Country—Tribal Projects: The Council of Energy Resource Tribes maintains an online Energy Efficiency Guide, which includes information about specific energy efficiency projects undertaken by tribes.
  • Southwest Energy Efficiency Project: The Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP) promotes energy efficiency in six states: Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. SWEEP tracks policy and legislative developments, profiles energy consumption and energy efficiency programs in each state, provides technical information and success story case studies, and sponsors workshops.
  • Local Governments for Sustainability: The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) is an organization of local, regional, and national governments that have committed to promoting sustainable development, which includes, among other things, energy efficiency and conservation programs and planning. ICLEI members have access to technical support in developing sustainability programs and campaigns. This support includes strategic planning, training, research, pilot project support, and networking.
  • Post Carbon Institute: The Post Carbon Institute provides technical information, tools, and education to help communities respond to the challenges of fossil fuel depletion and climate change. The Institute sponsors two programs: Post Carbon Cities, a program supporting local governments in addressing energy and climate change issues, and the Relocalization Network, a network of citizens' groups seeking to address energy and climate change issues within their communities.
