Eligibility for Legal Assistance

The legal assistance offered during the work week hours is limited to mission-related legal assistance. Mission-related legal assistance beneficiaries include active duty (including Reservists and National Guard on Title 10 status) and their dependents. Reservist JAGs only provide legal assistance regarding mobilization issues such as simple wills, powers of attorney, and Reservist rights vis-à-vis civilian employers (USERRA).

Reservists and National Guard subject to federal mobilization in an inactive status, are eligible for mission related legal assistance ONLY as to wills and powers of attorney. Other legal assistance is prohibited until the member is on Title 10 status (Dependents of these members are not authorized legal assistance until the member is on Title 10 status).

Areas Outside the Scope of Legal Assistance: Commercial enterprises, criminal issues, standards of conduct issues, law of armed conflict issues, official matters in which the Air Force has an interest, legal concerns or issues raised on behalf of another person, and representation of a client in a court or administrative proceeding. Drafting or reviewing real estate sales or closing documents, separation agreements or divorce decrees, or intervivos trusts.

All members who wish to obtain legal assistance must first call (910) 394-1986 for an appointment.

More than 1300 commissioned officers in the Air Force serve within The Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps. Our legal practice is challenging and offers early opportunities to litigate in a variety of forums. In addition, joining The Judge Advocate General's Department allows an attorney to engage in public service within an institution highly respected by the American public. We firmly believe that our judge advocates make a valuable and lasting contribution to their country.
Financial assistance programs are available for law students who plan to enter the JAG Department upon graduation. You may choose from the Graduate Law Program (GLP) or the One Year College Program (OYCP).

Both a brochure and application are available on line at our Active Duty JAG Recruiting Webpage or our Air Force Reserve JAG Recruiting Webpage. You may also contact the 440th Airlift Wing Legal Office at 414-482-5211 if you have questions.
