Course offering will be in early Spring FY2013.    Courses will be offered weekly beginning 5 March through 28 May on Tuesdays at 0900 and Thursdays at 1800 – mark your calendars to attend!

Charting the Course to a Healthier Force: Military Health Promotion Program Basics is an Army Health Promotion Course designed to provide practical training in health promotion program development, implementation and evaluation at the installation level to facilitate behavioral and environmental changes that are conducive to the health and well-being of the military community.

Description

Charting the Course to a Healthier Force follows the health promotion program framework specified in AR 600-63. Content includes: health promotion program planning, goal setting, implementation, use of a business plan and communication tools, and evaluation.  Attendees will gain knowledge and skills through lecture, discussion, and practical exercises.  The course will be conducted in three phases:

  • Self-study module and pre-test
  • Online core sessions and post-test
  • Individual projects

There is no registration fee for this course.  The course is limited to 50 participants.  Charting the Course to a Healthier Force will be offered via Defense Connect Online (DCO) and a corresponding telephonic call-in . The expected duration of the DCO classes is 12 weeks with one module offered per week. For your convenience, there will be two classes conducted, per module, each week.  Each module one will be offered on Tuesday morning and Thursday late afternoon. This will allow you flexibility in your scheduling and/or a chance to participate in that module again if you wish.

  • Identify and describe the key aspects of Army Health Promotion as described in Army Regulation 600-63
  • Describe the vision, mission, goals and objectives of Army health promotion programs
  • Explain the five functional areas in developing effective evidence-based health promotion programs
  • Develop the core facets of a health promotion program based on a case study to demonstrate comprehension of key aspects of an Army health promotion program.

Prerequisites

You must be a DoD civilian or military member.

Participants must be registered and familiarized with using DCO.

You must have a MilBook account. Go to https://www.milsuite.mil/ to register on MilBook.  Materials will be posted to MilBook, so a working understanding is required.

Target Audience

Army Public Health Nurses, Health Promotion Directors and Officers, Health Educators, Health Care Providers, Dietitians, Physical and Occupational Therapists, fitness professionals, Community Health Promotion Council members, and anyone else involved in installation Health Promotion.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and CHES credits

21 CEUs for nurses and 24 CECH credits for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) have been approved.

Course Completion Requirements

  • Participants will be required to complete all tests, attend all sessions and complete the post-course assignment with a competency level of 80% before receiving a certificate of completion and corresponding CEU's/CME's.
  • Session attendance is monitored and participants will not be permitted to enter a session after the first 15 minutes.
  • Missed sessions: If there are extenuating circumstances; TDY, mission requirements, family emergency, please contact the course coordinators.

 After registering for the course, participants will be provided access to the read-ahead materials and the pre-test.
