Youth Accused of Hacking into Volpe Computer System

April 23, 2001

Summary

Charges were filed against a 15-year-old Connecticut boy in state juvenile court in Cambridge, MA, for allegedly gaining unauthorized access into a computer system at RSPA's Volpe Center in Cambridge and then using that access to hack into the Air Mobility Command computer system at Scott Air Force Base. The youth was also charged by the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office with illegally intercepting wire communications and malicious destruction of property. In March 2000, the Air Force determined that an intruder gained access to the two computer systems. Investigators traced subsequent intrusions to a computer located at the boy's home. Agents from OIG and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations executed a Federal search warrant at the teen's home and seized computers allegedly used in the intrusions.
