Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to develop technology that facilitates mixed reality training in the real world thus affording soldiers the capability to train anywhere at any time. The focus of the proposed effort will be addressing key technology gaps to achieving the capability. We will address 1) the ability to accurately compute location of the trainee and orientation of their head and weapon, and 2) the ability to accurately and quickly sense the depth of real, potentially moving objects in the scene. The proposed effort leverages the TRX Sentinel Personnel Tracking and Monitoring System, which will be combined with additional soldier worn sensors for depth sensing. The system will be able to wirelessly track the location and orientation of multiple individuals in an indoor (GPS denied) or outdoor environment, simultaneously generating a local map of the soldier's position relative to the environment. Our solution does not require the training environment to be equipped with any sensors, communications devices, or other infrastructure. The same technology used for tracking people can be used to track position and orientation of targets as well as the individual soldier's weapons.
