The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, the U.S. Consulate General in Barcelona, and six Consular Agencies located in cities around Spain provide consular services to the approximately 1,000,000 American tourists that visit Spain each year and to the over 80,000 U.S. citizens who are residing in Spain.

The American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit of the Consular Section provides information and assistance to U.S. citizens in the Madrid area. For information on all American Citizen Services please make your selection from the options on the menu at the left side of this page. Effective 1 July 2008, you must make an appointment online to be allowed entry into the consular section for routine (non emergency) services. If you can conduct your business by mail or on-line, please do so.

For notary services information call (91) 587-2240 between 3:00 - 5:00. p.m. An appointment is required for this service.

For emergency assistance after hours, American citizens may call (91) 587-2200 and ask to speak to the duty officer.  No documentary or passport services are available on the last Friday of each month, evenings, weekends or holidays. You may also contact the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the US Department of State for assistance at 888-407-4747 (US toll free number) or at 317-472-2328 (from overseas).

The American Citizen Services Unit handles a wide variety of services. The unit issues emergency passports, processes passport applications, provides notarial services, provides voting information, and documents births and deaths of Americans in Spain.  It also assists travelers in distress; for example, in acquiring funds from home, in arranging for medical care, or in assisting Americans who are arrested or incarcerated in Spain.

Please allow several hours - while we make every effort to provide efficient service, unanticipated emergencies can occur at anytime and there may be inevitable delays in providing services to those seeking our assistance.

Recent world-wide terrorism events have created the necessity for restricting luggage, back packs, or carry bags being brought into the Embassy Consular Section. Please DO NOT attempt to bring these items inside. The guard has been instructed to prevent access of any luggage or carry bags or packs unless there is a clearly demonstrated emergency or medical need that is authorized by the Consular Officer or the Regional Security Officer.

In addition, due to the large number of individuals seeking assistance in the Consular Section, only those individuals with appointments are normally granted entry into the  Consular Section. Please ask accompanying family or friends to wait for you in a nearby location or arrange to meet them later in the day. We appreciate your cooperation and regret any inconvenience this may cause.
