09.10.2012 Ambassador Marcie Ries Meets with AmCham Members

Ambassador Marcie Ries welcomed AmCham members during the barbecue cocktail organized Oct. 2, 2012 at the Marine House of the US Embassy in Bulgaria with the kind support of the U.S. Commercial Service. She vowed to further develop US-Bulgaria trade relations hoping that the businesses will cooperate actively in this endeavor.

02.10.2012 AmCham Launches Quality Management Working Group

AmCham launched a Quality Management Working Group on September 25th, 2012 at the initiative of the AmCham member Intertek-Moody. A dozen of AmCham member companies were presented at the meeting. Vyara Stankova, deputy general manager, South Eastern Europe at Intertek and Boyan Gyuzelev, business development manager at Intertek were elected chairs of the working group. Valentin Georgiev, AmCham executive director welcomed the group.

01.10.2012 Joint Statement of Business regarding Decision of SEWRC

AmCham Bulgaria in partnership with German-Bulgarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Austrian Business Council sent a letter to the Prime-Minister Boyko Borissov with regard to the Decision No. Ц-33 of 14 September 2012 of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC) setting provisional charges for access to the grid, applicable to the producers of electricity from renewable energy sources (RES).

IMF says debt-hit Europe must 'restore confidence'

Europe must do more to tackle its fiscal crisis, which is heaping extra pressure on an already-strained global financial system, the International Monetary Fund warned in a new report Wednesday, AFP reported. Despite some new policy measures, among them a bond-buying programme aimed at helping debt-riddled nations tame their borrowing costs, the risks of a world credit crunch and recession loom, the IMF said, Focus wrote.

Bulgaria, US to sign crime-fighting agreement during Napolitano visit

United States homeland security secretary Janet Napolitano and Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov are to sign a bilateral agreement on October 10 2012 on strengthening co-operation between the US and Bulgaria in preventing serious crime. The agreement, endorsed recently by Bulgaria’s Cabinet, will be signed during a visit to the Bulgarian capital city Sofia by Napolitano, The Sofia Globe wrote.

Producers, Retailers Argue over Display of Organic Products in Bulgarian Stores

The Bulgarian Organic Products Association has suggested that shops should keep organic products separate from conventional ones, while retailers insist that the items should be displayed alongside other food products in order to make it easier for customers to choose. A discussion is yet to take place of amendments to the Common Organizations of Markets in Agricultural Products of the European Union Implementing Act, Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) wrote.

Gurdon and Yamanaka share Nobel prize for stem cell work

Two pioneers of stem cell research have shared the Nobel prize for medicine or physiology. John Gurdon from the UK and Shinya Yamanaka from Japan were awarded the prize for changing adult cells into stem cells, which can become any other type of cell in the body, BBC wrote.

The American Research Center in Sofia will host a conference October 25-26, 2012, "Communication and Commerce in the Balkans from Alexander the Great to Alexander Battenberg."
