  • Treatment Facility

Inside the Treatment Facility are three boxlines. Waste is remotely dumped into sorting troughs. Then, Operators watch through thick protective glass and manipulate a robotic arm that separates, sorts, and repackages the radioactive waste.

  • Stored Drums and Boxes

The waste, generated primarily at Rocky Flats during the 1970s and 1980s, is stored in drums and boxes.

  • Retrieval Drum Survey

After being retrieved, drums of waste are surveyed for radiation levels, prior to characterization.

  • Characterization Drum Mounting

The mounting platform of the real-time radiography unit is loaded with drums to characterize the waste inside of drums.

  • Box and Drum Retrieval

Cross-Sections of a light-metals box and 55-gallon drums show the type of waste they contain. Most of it is indusrial waste generated at Rocky Flats during the 1970s and 1980s.
