Desdemona Park, in the heart of the historic walled city of Famagusta, has been transformed into an environmentally friendly oasis set against the backdrop of the city’s mediaeval walls and rich history. With support from USAID through the Supporting Activities that Value the Environment (SAVE) project, every element of the long-established park has been re-designed to protect Cyprus’ precious natural resources. It integrates xeriscape—or water-wise—landscaping and a dry zone area with efficient irrigation techniques. Playground equipment and benches will provide entertainment and shade for children of all ages.

The park was officially re-opened at a ceremony on May 21, 2010. In his remarks, USAID Representative Alan Davis emphasized the importance of community action to protect Cyprus’ valuable natural resources. Barbara Rossmiller, Chief of Party for SAVE, noted the choice of plants and the widespread use of mulch and compost can be replicated anywhere, including to beautify home gardens.

Supporting the transformation of Desdemona Park was part of SAVE’s ongoing efforts to tackle important environmental issues on the island. Like all USAID-funded programs in Cyprus, SAVE is aimed at facilitating reunification of the island, including through better management of the island’s meager and dwindling water supplies.
