158th Fighter Wing History

In March of 1942, just a few months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the 384th Fighter Bomber Squadron came into being. They trained at various locations around the US and by the time they arrived in the China-India-Burma theater of the war, they had become the 530th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. They fought their way towards Japan and the end of the war while members of the Tenth, then the Fourteenth Air Forces.

The Air National Guard as we know it today -- a separate reserve component of the United States Air Force -- was a product of the politics of postwar planning and interservice rivalry during World War II. The men who planned and maneuvered for an independent postwar Air Force during World War II didn't place much faith in the reserves, especially the state-dominated National Guard.
