Paperless Visa Application: Form DS-160

Before you begin...

  1. Choose your visa category.  Please ensure that you enter the correct visa category when completing the on-line application.  The most common categories are business travelers (B1), tourists (B2), academic students (F1), exchange visitors such as au pairs, summer work/travel participants and researchers (J1), and ship crew members (C1/D).  Please also read our general information on visa categories.
  2. Have a photo ready.  To complete your online visa application, you will need a digital photo. Please read carefully information on photo specifications and how to upload your photo. In case the photo you upload is unsatisfactory (or you are unable to upload a photo), we can scan a photo for you, so please bring a photo with you to your visa interview.  The photo must meet strict formatting requirements or it may not be accepted!
  3. Record Your Application Number.  When you begin your on-line application, please write down and save your application number.  This number will allow you to return to the website and resume filling out a partially-completed application in case you are not able to complete the entire form at one time.  The application "times out" fairly quickly during periods of inactivity, so writing down your application number is very important!
  4. Confirmation page.  Upon completion of your application, you will have the option to print a confirmation page.  Please bring this confirmation page with you to your visa interview.  You do not need to print the entire application, however.
  5. Questions?  If you have questions, please write to us at VisaTallinn@state.gov, and we will promptly reply to you.
