Research Activities

The Center for Biokinetic and Dosimetric Research carries on research in three main areas in addition to pursuing applied radiation dosimetry projects. The Center has pioneered research in age-dependent biokinetic modeling of radionuclide distribution in the body for a number of elements of interest.

A second area of active research involves the development of physiological information needed for modeling and of anatomic models or phantoms for dosimetric computations. The mathematical phantom in current use for occupational and medical dose estimates originated at ORNL and has been further developed and improved here. More information about the age- and gender-specific phantom development under way at the Center is available here together with a summary of recent developments in the physiological area. A downloadable document describing the current mathematical phantom can also be obtained.

Research aimed at improving dosimetric methods has been a strong emphasis and continues at the Center. More information about our research on dosimetric methods is available here.
