We, the community of Cummings Elementary School, are committed to guiding our students to become successful learners and responsible global citizens.

Goal 1: Math Problem Solving

Mathematics SMART Goal:
By June 2014, all students will increase performance on targeted mathematical problem solving skills using the Four Step Problem Solving Method implemented in all curricular areas as measured by the TN3 Math Subtest and other System-wide and school-based assessments. The targeted skills are solving problems that arise in mathematics and in other contexts, the application and adaptation of a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems, and the monitoring and reflection on the process of mathematical problem solving.

Essence of the goal:
Students will solve problems that arise in mathematics and in other contexts. They will apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems, and will monitor and reflect on the process of mathematical problem solving.

Student Friendly Language:
We will get better at solving problems in math and use different ways to solve word problems and check our work.

Goal 2: Writing

Writing SMART Goal:
By June 2014, all students will increase performance on targeted writing skills using 6+1 Traits of Writing implemented in all curricular areas as measured by the TN3 Writing Subtest and school-based assessments. The targeted skills are focused ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.

Essence of the goal:
Students will demonstrate written and/or symbolic communication skills to express their ideas.

Student Friendly Language:
We want to write better and try our best. We will use good punctuation, spelling, details, and put things in the right order.
