The Bureau of Diplomatic Security (DS), the law enforcement and security resource of the Department of State, is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for the conduct of Foreign Affairs. To accomplish this goal, Special Agents of the Bureau’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) are assigned to embassies worldwide as Regional Security Officers (RSO) and lead a cadre of committed professionals comprised of engineers and technicians, couriers, investigators, U.S.M.C. - Marine Security Guards, Local Guard Force and security specialists.
In addition, the Bureau of Diplomatic Security administers the Rewards for Justice Program. The program is a valuable component in the fight against international terrorism. Under this program, the Secretary of State may authorize substantial rewards for information that leads to the arrest or conviction of anyone who plans, commits, finances or attempts international terrorist acts against U.S. persons or property.
The Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) initiated a program to assist the U.S. private sector with the establishment of country councils in foreign cities to enhance the exchange of security related information abroad. These organizations encourage security managers of U.S. enterprises to organize themselves to better cope with security related problems by pooling their resources and engaging in open dialogues to address pertinent security concerns.
