Post Graduate Year 1 Pharmacy Practice Residency
VA Western New York Healthcare System (Buffalo Facility) has four Pharmacy Practice Residency Positions. The Buffalo VA Medical Center is a 150 bed Tertiary Care facility affiliated with the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB) and located adjacent to the Medical Complex. Pharmacy Service at the VA Western New York Healthcare System is affiliated with the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB) School of Pharmacy as a training site for doctoral pharmacy students in various aspects of Pharmaceutical Care.
Program Description
Core Rotations:
- Acute/Critical Care Pharmacotherapy

- Primary Care (Ambulatory rotation)
- Diabetes/Dyslipidemia Clinics
- Psychopharmacy
- Geriatrics

Expectations and Intended Outcomes:
During the course of the program, the resident will be expected to:
- Complete all core rotations, provide direct patient care in multiple environments.
- Organize information to provide education to staff, patients and caregivers well as becoming an integral member of the health care team.
- Develop skills that will lead to the development of an independent pharmacy practitioner and prepare for a potential Post Graduate Year 2 residency.
- Use experiential training to develop knowledge and skills to be a leader in pharmacy practice.
Learning Experiences
During the course of the program, the resident will be expected to:
- Provide Acute/Critical Care Pharmacy Services, including total parenteral nutrition, antibiotic preparation, antibiotic monitoring, pharmacokinetic consults, IV admixture and Unit Dose Drug Distribution, provision of discharge counseling, and provision of Drug Information Services.
- Provide Outpatient Pharmacy services including verifying orders, checking and dispensing, and patient counseling.
- Participate in community based fairs, such as Veterans community programs and health fairs.
- Design, implement and analyze an Investigational Review Board (IRB) (investigational review board approved) research project.
- Develop, implement and present a Drug Usage Evaluation (DUE) Demonstration Project and Administrative project.
- Develop public speaking skills through continuing education lectures and other healthcare teaching opportunities.
- Develop written skills in the form of written progress notes or formal consultations in the patient's chart and interdepartmental memoranda or procedures.
- Design, implement and analyze an Investigational Review Board (IRB) (investigational review board approved) research project as well as Drug Usage Evaluation (DUE)and Medication Usage Evaluation (MUE) project.
Trainees Information
The prospective trainee must have a Doctor of Pharmacy or equivalent educational experience prior to entering the residency. If licensing in New York State, the resident is recommended to take the compounding portion of the exam in January in order to meet the residency licensing timeline. The residency will begin about July 1 and will require 2000 hours of residency training. The stipend for the resident is $42,113 which also includes 13 days each of sick and personal leave. Additional benefits include health and life insurance. Upon completion of the residency, the trainee will receive a certificate of completion. You must be a US Citizen.
