Overview

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy Sana’a is responsible for all press and public diplomacy activities that facilitate understanding about the U.S. mission in Yemen and promote cultural awareness and education.

Under the direction of the Public Affairs Officer, these activities include responding to media inquiries, conducting and supporting cultural programs, and administering educational exchanges. The Office of Public Affairs also provides Public Affairs guidance and support to the Ambassador and other Embassy officials.

Press Office:

The Press and Information Office handles daily media inquiries, interview requests, issues press releases, distributes the Washington File electronically, conducts non-academic exchange programs for journalists, arranges media training in the U.S. for working professionals, and supports the media needs of U.S. Government officials and official delegations. The Press Office provides many opportunities to help build the professional capacity of Yemeni journalists to increase public understanding of U.S. policy and assistance efforts.  

In addition, our electronic reference service, the Information Resource Center, answers inquiries about U.S. policy, as well as about politics, economics, society, and culture.

Cultural Affairs Office: 

The Cultural Affairs Office carries out activities to promote professional and cultural ties between the people of Yemen and United States. The Office coordinates a variety of exchange, speaker, English-language, artistic and interactive programs that address major issues such as democracy and civil society, human rights, Islam in America, education, entrepreneurship, independent media, local government, cultural preservation, and administration of justice.

Among the many programs were administer and support are supervises U.S. academic exchange programs such as Fulbright, and Humphrey Fellowships. We also arrange short-term professional visits to the U.S. in selected fields, under the International Visitor Leadership Program for Yemenis to pursue higher education and also to develop professional skills and experience.

The International Visitor Leadership Program facilitates travel by Yemeni journalists, academics, politicians, government officials, religious scholars, community leaders and NGO officials to engage in a dialogue with their counterparts in the U.S. For a complete list of our exchange programs—from high school to post-doctoral programs—please follow this link.

Other programs include providing student educational advising services and computer-based testing, arranging briefings on a variety of current topics, supporting civic education and community service projects, holding public events, and encouraging partnerships between U.S. and Yemeni cultural organizations.

In addition to cultural programs, the Office develops and maintains contacts with academics, political leaders, community leaders, scholars, NGO representatives and other professionals to promote a common understanding of issues of bilateral interest.
