Commerce Department Trade Mission to Eastern and Central Europe Advances Civil Nuclear Export Opportunities
SUPPORTS PRESIDENT OBAMA’S NATIONAL EXPORT INITIATIVE
BRATISLAVA, Slovakia – Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sánchez today wrapped up a seven-day trade mission to Eastern Europe. During remarks at an American Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Bratislava, Slovakia, Sanchez reinforced the vital role that U.S. civil nuclear companies can play in developing Slovakia’s nuclear energy sector while growing U.S. exports. Sánchez’s civil nuclear trade mission also made stops in Poland and the Czech Republic.
“The United States recognizes that nuclear power serves our common energy security and environmental objectives,” Sánchez said. “Increasing U.S. exports of nuclear energy products will help Slovakia meet its goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help the U.S. reach its goal of doubling exports. This is a win-win situation.”
Sánchez was joined on the mission by representatives from 10 leading U.S. civil nuclear organizations. The delegation met with government and public utility officials to discuss issues surrounding civil nuclear infrastructure development in all three nations.
While in Warsaw, Sánchez signed a Joint Declaration on Civil Nuclear Commercial Cooperation among the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Department of Energy, and Poland’s Minister of Economy. The declaration calls for the governments to cooperate on civil nuclear power; specifically regarding private sector construction of nuclear plants and supporting infrastructure, open and transparent tender procedures, and scientific research and development works to make nuclear solutions safe, effective, economical, and environmentally friendly.
In Prague, Sánchez and Czech Republic Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Milan Hovorka announced the creation of a bilateral commercial dialogue to address the U.S.-Czech Republic overall economic and commercial relationship, as well as various market access issues.
Representatives from the following companies accompanied Sánchez: Bechtel; Burns & Roe; CH2MHill; University of Oregon; ConverDyn; Exelon; Lightbridge; Shaw Power Group; Westinghouse; and WM Mining/PowerTechUSA.
Poland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia offer the U.S. civil nuclear industry significant opportunities to introduce advanced technologies and products to markets interested in developing their civil nuclear infrastructures.
This was the 19th trade mission led by the Department of Commerce since President Obama announced the National Export Initiative (NEI) during his State of the Union earlier this year. The NEI aims to double U.S. exports in the next five years, supporting several million new jobs.
