Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science

The Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science develops synthesis products, fosters communication, and pursues science in the following focus areas:

Climate change

[image:] A low waterfall in a small stream. Changes in the timing of spring snowmelt due to climate change can have an impact on water cycling.Changes in the earth's climate are having substantial effects on forest ecosystems and may reduce the ability of forests to provide important environmental benefits.
Learn more about our work to help land managers and others respond to these impacts >>>

Carbon science and management

[image:] A mix of tree species in a forest. Forests store carbon in all components and levels, from soils to shrubs to tall trees.Forests play an important role in the global carbon cycle, and forest management activities can affect the amount of carbon that is stored in forest ecosystems.
Learn more about our work to synthesize information for decision-makers on carbon science and management >>>

Bioenergy

[image:] A biomass harvester selectively cutting trees that will be used to produce bioenergy.Bioenergy creates electricity, heat, and fuel from renewable energy sources, including woody materials from forests.
