AWIPS QCMS Displays

AWIPS LDAD QC displays consist of color-coded stations plots, where mesonet observations found bad by the QCMS are distinctly colored to indicate possible problems with their reported data. Sampling on any station invokes the display of a small QC table indicating which QC checks have been applied at the time of the display, which ones have been passed, and which ones have been failed. Plots are automatically updated as new data arrives and is quality controlled.

Blanks in the QC table indicate that the associated QC check was not applied. When the check was applied, the observation either passed (P) or failed (F) the automated QC checks, or was labeled good (G) or bad (B) through the QCMS subjective intervention procedures. To access the QC plots, go to either the regional, state, or WFO scale, and select the Local Data - Other Plots Cascading Menu under the Obs Pull-Down Menu. For more information, see Chapter 10 of the AWIPS Users Manual.

To access text QCMS summary messages via the AWIPS Text Display (Section 4 in the AWIPS Users Manual), use the following nine-character descriptor:

CCCNNNXXX

where, "CCC" is the number assigned to the data provider, "NNN" identifies the desired QC summary file [i.e., QCH = hourly, QCD = daily, QCW = weekly, and QCM = monthly (4 week)], and "XXX" is the three-character NWS field office ID.

Data provider numbers as assigned as follows:

001 = SAO (METAR manual observations);

002 = Buoy (Buoy, ship, and CMAN reports);

003 = NPN (NOAA Profiler Network surface reports);

004 = AUTO (METAR automated, but non-ASOS reports);

005 = ASOS; and

006 - 020 are assigned to local data networks ingested through LDAD.

For example, typing "005QCDSLC" into the entry box of a Salt Lake City Text Display, would generate a daily summary of ASOS quality control statistics.
