Provisional 2008 Land-Water Classification Data Ready: USGS NWRC Geographer William Jones and Five Rivers Services contractors Adrienne Garber and Matthew Keller uploaded 391 provisional 2008 Coastwide Reference Monitoring System (CRMS) land-water classification maps and data to the LaCoast.gov site. Finalized data will be published as a USGS Data Series. CRMS is a mechanism to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of wetland restoration at the project, regional, and coastwide level. Presentation on Micronesian Mangroves: USGS NWRC Ecologist Nicole Cormier presented a talk at the Palau International Coral Reef Center for local foresters and environmental managers on August 9, in Koror, Palau titled “Elevation change in Micronesian mangroves.” (Nicole Cormier; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8838)

Proposed Resource Managers Handbook on Sea-level Rise and Ecological Modeling: USGS NWRC Branch Chief Tom Doyle will visit U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Texas coast refuges and Ecological Services offices August 20-24. The purpose is to discuss a proposed Climate Science Center project to develop a Department of the Interior handbook for resource managers on sea-level rise and ecological modeling. The handbook will provide a practical synthesis of the current state of knowledge and suggest tools suitable for DOI land management needs across the southeastern United States. (Thomas W. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District and NWRC Meet: On August 24, USGS NWRC Director Phil Turnipseed, Physical Scientist Craig Conzelmann, Branch Chief Greg Steyer, and Branch Chief Scott Wilson will meet with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District Regional Planning and Environment Division South Chief Troy Constance and Geographer Michelle Boudreaux Meyers to discuss 2013 planning and collaboration between the two agencies.
