- NWRC Continues Celebration of 20th Anniversary in Acadiana: The USGS National Wetlands Research Center is commemorating twenty years of worldwide wetlands science in its current location in Lafayette, Louisiana. An exhibit located in the main lobby highlights press from the facility’s construction through its first year of operation. The display features newspaper articles and other coverage from that time period, invitations from the ribbon cutting ceremony, and the original shovels used for the groundbreaking ceremony. - NWRC to Forge Memorandum of Understanding with LSU Medical Center: On May 1, 2012, USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director Phil Turnipseed, Deputy Director Matthew Andersen, NWRC Botanist Larry Allain, and Wetlands and Forest Ecosystems Branch Chief Tom Doyle met with staff from Rutgers University and the LSU Pennington Biomedical Center located in Baton Rouge. Discussion focused on constructing a new Memorandum of Understanding between the NWRC and the Pennington Center. The MOU will facilitate a collaborative project using Louisiana native plants. Researchers will study botanical evidence to determine the medicinal value of these plants in helping to cure diabetes. (Gabrielle Boudreaux Bodin; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8655)
- USGS Ecosystems International Program Presentation: Joe Bunnell, International Program Coordinator, gave a presentation May 1, 2012, to NWRC staff about the program’s international ecosystems research activities. The USGS International Program Office works with Ecosystems Mission Area scientists to find ways of facilitating partnerships with governments, NGOs, universities, and individuals in other countries to conduct research with mutual benefits to both the partner country and the United States. After his talk, Bunnell met individually with scientists to discuss their international work and ways USGS can help fulfill treaty obligations. (Matthew Andersen; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8501)
- Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force Executive Director to Visit NWRC: On May 9, 2012, USGS National Wetlands Research Director Phil Turnipseed, NWRC Deputy Director Matthew Andersen, and staff of the NWRC will host Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force (GCERTF) Executive Director John H. Hankinson, Jr., U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service GCERTF Staff Member Chris Pease, and USGS Gulf of Mexico Coordinator Alyssa Dausman in a day-long visit that will include a tour of the NWRC, meetings and discussions with scientists, and a trip to the Atchafalaya River Basin to visit ongoing NWRC science in the region. - NWRC Invited to Join SLCC’s ASLT Degree Program Committee: USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director Phil Turnipseed was invited to become a member of the South Louisiana Community College’s (SLCC) Associates of Science Louisiana Transfer (ASLT) degree program committee. ASLT is charged with constructing and maintaining a creditable and effective science program for the SLCC. As a committee member, Turnipseed will help faculty suggest areas for improvement and recommend changes in policy and program aims. (Gabrielle Boudreaux Bodin; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8655)
- NWRC Climate Science Program Reviewed by Ecosystems Mission Area: On May 11, 2012, USGS National Wetlands Research Center Research Ecologists James Grace, Ken Krauss, NWRC Director Phil Turnipseed, and others will participate in a periodic review of a significant portion of the NWRC’s ongoing and planned climate science research. - Senator Landrieu’s Staffer Visits NWRC: Elizabeth Weiner, Legislative Assistant with Senator Mary Landrieu’s Washington, D.C. office, toured the NWRC and met with NWRC Director Phil Turnipseed on April 30, 2012. Weiner works on appropriations for the Senator and wanted to learn more about the work of NWRC and about mapping products that could be available for their use.
