- Creation of Landcover Map for Natchez Trace Documented: The creation of a landcover map of the National Park Service’s (NPS) 444 mile long Natchez Trace Parkway was documented in an USGS Open File Report by Amina Rangoonwala (Five River Services, LLC), Terri Bannister (Five River Services, LLC) and Elijah Ramsey III (USGS National Wetlands Research Center). Field sites classified according to the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) system by NPS formed the basis of the landcover classification. Digital orthophoto quarter quadrangles (following U.S. Geological Survey mapping standards) created from the 1-meter color-infrared photography were used to map the defined NVC classes for the entire Parkway. Mapped landcover classes represent unique sets of NVC alliances that provided a consistent, quantifiable, and reproducible map product. (Elijah Ramsey III; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8575)
- NWRC Ecologist To Present Lecture and Workshop in Sweden: USGS National Wetlands Research Center Ecologist James Grace will present a lecture and teach a workshop on causal analysis and conservation biology at the University of Stockholm in Sweden the week of January 16, 2012. Sixty participants from 8 countries are expected to attend. (James Grace; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8632)
- Kickoff Meeting for the Atchafalaya Basin Lidar Collection Project: On January 17, 2012, USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director Phil Turnipseed, NWRC Geographer Cindy Thatcher, and USGS Geospatial Liaison to Louisiana Chris Cretini will participate in a kickoff meeting for the Atchafalaya Basin Lidar collection project. This project offers an excellent opportunity to assess elevation and hydrologic flow changes within the Atchafalaya Basin following the high flow volumes of spring 2011, conditions which have not occurred since 1973. The work is part of a continuing program to rebuild a high resolution digital elevation model for coastal Louisiana. The Atchafalaya collection will be the first of 2012, with plans to include a Lidar survey of the Barataria Basin this spring. Resulting data will be used by multiple state and Federal partners responsible for managing flood risks, wetland restoration efforts, and natural resources within the region. (D. - NWRC To Host USGS HIF and Canadian Agencies for Discussions: On January 19, 2012, the USGS National Wetlands Research Center will host staff of the USGS Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility and Environment Canada/Water Survey Canada Agency to discuss wetland science monitoring and modeling opportunities.
