- NWRC and USGS Patuxent Wildlife Science Center Researchers Meet to Discuss Climate Change Research on the Eastern Seaboard: On February 17, 2011, Jim Grace (NWRC) and Glenn Guntenspergen (Patuxent WSC) met with Phil Turnipseed (USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director) to discuss collaborative opportunities between the science centers in supporting continuing climate change research on the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Seaboard of the United States. Turnipseed and Guntenspergen tentatively agreed to support post-doctorate research in this effort. The person would be collocated in the NWRC and work under the direction of both Grace and Guntenspergen. (Phil Turnipseed; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8501)
- NWRC Meets with Director of Aviation for the Lafayette Regional Airport: On February 18, 2011, Phil Turnipseed (USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director), Matthew Andersen (USGS National Wetlands Research Center Deputy Director), and Thomas Doyle (NWRC Wetlands and Forest Ecology Branch Chief) met with Greg Roberts, Director of Aviation for the Lafayette Regional Airport, to discuss operation, maintenance, and sustaining the NWRC aircraft and future collaborative opportunities. The NWRC, along with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, tentatively agreed to explore some channel stability/geotechnical analyses in association with the current airport expansion of runways and services. - NWRC Deputy Director Initiates Science Forum: On February 22, 2011, Matthew Andersen (USGS National Wetlands Research Center Deputy Director) met with NWRC principal investigators, scientists, and engineers to discuss the formation of the NWRC Director's Science Advisory Group. The meeting served as the kick-off for both a Science Advisory Group and Science Forum that will help guide NWRC science in the future. (Matthew Andersen; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8501)
- Homeschool Group Visits NWRC: Approximately 20 students of the CHEF of Lafayette Homeschool Group learned about issues related to Louisiana’s coastal wetlands and toured the USGS National Wetlands Research Center on February 22, 2011. (Gabrielle Bodin; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8655)
- NWRC Scientists Lead and Present Current Research at Workshop on Freshwater Diversions for Landscape-scale Conservation and Restoration in the Coastal Environment: On February 23, 2011, Thomas Doyle (NWRC Wetlands and Forest Ecosystems Branch Chief), Karen McKee (NWRC Principal Investigator), and Gregg Snedden (NWRC Ecologist) led and presented current research for a NOAA-led Workshop on Response of Louisiana Marsh Soils and Vegetation to Diversions hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This workshop is one of a series of workshops sponsored by the Louisiana Coastal Area Program (LCA) Science and Technology Office and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to inform the LCA Science and Technology Board, decision makers, and the public on technical issues regarding existing and planned freshwater diversions. These workshops will also provide the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force with the scientific foundation for considering diversions as one option within an overarching recovery strategy. Further, the workshop will outline remaining scientific questions regarding the efficacy and trade-offs in applying freshwater diversions for landscape-scale conservation and restoration in the coastal environment. - NWRC Hosts Landscape Ecologist to Discuss Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) in the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks: On February 25, 2011, Phil Turnipseed (USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director), Matthew Andersen (USGS National Wetlands Research Center Deputy Director), Scott Wilson (NWRC Spatial Analysis Branch Chief) and Thomas Doyle (NWRC Wetlands and Forest Ecosystems Branch Chief) will host Michael Osland (USEPA, Gulf Breeze, Fla.) to discuss the implementation, operation, and support of science related to the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks LCC.
