- NWRC Observes National Native American Heritage Month: The USGS National Wetlands Research Center is observing National Native American Heritage Month with special programming. The NWRC Library is hosting a month-long exhibit on workforce diversity in the center’s lobby. The exhibit highlights NWRC's Native American heritage resources. Also, National Park Service Park Ranger and Chitimacha Tribal Member Jodie Bacque will present “The Chitimacha: Louisiana’s First Federally Recognized Tribe” on November 30, 2010. She will share the history of this fascinating North American Indian tribe and what they are doing to preserve the culture of the only tribe in Louisiana to reside on ancestral homeland. - NWRC Meets with Texas A&M Regarding Hydrologic Modeling for Forecast Mekong Project: On November 16, 2010, Phil Turnipseed (USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director) and Tom Doyle (NWRC Wetlands Ecology Branch Chief) met with R. Srinivasan, Director of the Spatial Sciences Laboratory of Texas A&M University, to discuss collaborative opportunities in developing a presentation of cause and effect of dam building on the lower Mekong River. - NWRC Attends Caddo Lake Environmental Flows Public Meeting in Jefferson, Tex.: Phil Turnipseed (USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director) and Tom Doyle (NWRC Wetlands Ecology Branch Chief) attended a public and stakeholder meeting on the Caddo Lake Environmental Flows proposed project in Jefferson, Tex., on November 17, 2010. More than 100 people were in attendance including representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Caddo Lake Initiative, the USGS Texas Water Science Center, and many others. - NWRC Meets with Management Staff of the USFWS Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge: On November 17, 2010, Phil Turnipseed (USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director) and Tom Doyle (NWRC Wetlands Ecology Branch Chief) met with Mark Williams, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manager of the Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and his staff to discuss an upcoming Floral Taxonomy project being led by NWRC Botanist Larry Allain. - Students from Louisiana 4-H Citizenship Board To Visit NWRC: Approximately 30 students from the Louisiana 4-H Citizenship Board will meet at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center November 22, 2010, to plan their Service Learning Project which will focus on environmental service.
