NWRC Assists in Workshop on Species Loss in Keoladeo National Park: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) scientist Beth Middleton will help to organize a workshop on “Drought and Biodiversity Loss in the Keoladeo National Park” on April 6-8, 2009. The park is located in Rajasthan, India, where Middleton did her Ph.D. dissertation research in the 1980s. The Keoladeo Naturalist’s Association and the Tourism and Wildlife Association of India are conducting a study on species loss in Keoladeo National Park. Via technical agreements with those organizations, Middleton will assist in the assessment of species loss. (Beth Middleton, Lafayette, La., 337-266-8618)
NWRC Participates in the U.S. Consulate’s Earth Day Series in Chennai, India: As part of the U.S. Consulate’s Earth Day Series, USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) scientist Beth Middleton will give a lecture entitled “Climate change and the future of the wetlands” on April 22, 2009 in Chennai, India. The lecture is sponsored by the U.S. Consulate General in Chennai in association with the C.P.R. Environment Education Center (CPREEC). The lecture will be followed by a media interview at CPREEC. Middleton will also give a number of other lectures in India throughout April, including ones at the U.S. Consulate General, the Wildlife Institute, Jawahlal Nehru University, and Dehli University. NWRC Represented at the 2nd Annual Women’s Conference at the University of Louisiana Lafayette: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) contractor Courtney Schaneville exhibited information on 4 NWRC scientists (Rebecca Howard, Jill Jenkins, Karen McKee, and Beth Middleton) at the 2nd Annual Women’s Conference on the campus of the University of Louisiana Lafayette on March 25, 2009. The conference theme was “Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet,” and the focus was on women’s interests and needs. The conference was attended by more than 150 women from the Lafayette, La., area, including professionals, stay-at-home mothers, and college students. NWRC Participates in the Gulf and South Atlantic Regional Panel on Aquatic Invasive Species: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) scientist Jacoby Carter gave two presentations at the Gulf and South Atlantic Regional Panel on Aquatic Invasive Species in Shreveport, La., the week of March 30, 2009. One presentation is entitled “The Natural History of an Urban Nutria (Myocaster coypus) Population 2005-2008 and Implications for Management and Control,” and the other is entitled “ Preliminary Studies of Invasive Island Applesnails (Pomacea insularum) in Southern Louisiana.” (Jacoby Carter, Lafayette, La., 337-266-8620)

USGS Releases Proceedings for the Second All-USGS Modeling Conference: On March 26, 2009, USGS released the proceedings for the Second All-USGS Modeling Conference held in Orange Beach, Ala., on February 11-14, 2009. An online version of the proceedings may be found at http://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2009/5013. USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) scientist Jacoby Carter helped to organize the conference and presented two posters. NWRC Branch Chief Thomas Doyle and scientist Ken Krauss also presented posters at the conference.
