- USGS EDRR Partner Network Expands to Kentucky – the Bluegrass State: USGS National Wetlands Research Center scientist Randy Westbrooks served as a keynote speaker at the first annual Bluegrass State Invasive Species Conference on December 11 – 12, 2008. The conference, hosted by the University of Kentucky Invasive Species Working Group in Lexington, was attended by over 140 people from across the state. As part of the conference, Westbrooks co-hosted an organizational meeting of the Kentucky Early Detection and Rapid Response (EDRR) Coordinating Committee. The new committee, comprising representatives from Federal, State, and local agencies and organizations involved in invasive species management, will lead in the development of State and local elements of the National EDRR System for Invasive Plants, within the Bluegrass State.

- ACES: A Conference on Ecosystem Services: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) scientist Stephen Faulkner organized and chaired a session on the Lower Mississippi River Valley at ACES: A Conference on Ecosystem Services December 8-11, 2008 in Naples, Fla. Faulkner also gave a talk on Modeling and Data Assimilation Frameworks for Forecasting Ecosystem Services in the Lower Mississippi Valley. The conference was cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It brought together leading experts to synthesize research, methods, and tools to effectively incorporate ecosystem services into resource management, conservation, restoration, and development decisions. - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District Briefing: Jim Stefanov of the USGS South Central Area office, Charlie Demas, director of the USGS Louisiana Water Science Center, and Greg Smith, director of the USGS National Wetlands Research Center, briefed Deputy District Engineer Tom Holden on December 15, 2008 in New Orleans, La., concerning activities in the South Central Area. - Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Aquatic Nuisance Task Force Meeting: USGS National Wetlands Research Center scientists Jill Jenkins and Jacoby Carter participated in the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Aquatic Nuisance Task Force meeting on December 17, 2008 in Baton Rouge. They briefed the task force concerning their work with invasive island applesnails. Jenkins also spoke with them regarding a proposal concerning Asian carp. - Lafayette Christian Academy Science Fair: USGS National Wetlands Research Center contractors Marshall Holstrom, Heather Baldwin, Daphne Broussard, and David Guilbeau judged fifty 7th grade projects for the Lafayette Christian Academy Science Fair on December 17, 2008. - USGS National Wetlands Research Center geographer Blaire Hutchison provided images of four Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration (CWPPRA) fact sheet maps to Sharon Coogle, senior editor, Koupal Communications. Ms. Coogle requested the maps for use in CWPPRA’s newsletter, WaterMarks, which is published three times a year. (Blaire Hutchison, Baton Rouge, La., 225-578-7490)
- USGS scientist Virgina Burkett is quoted concerning sea level rise and the Mississippi Delta in the first part of a three part series by the Times Picayune (New Orleans, La.).
