Departmental/Bureau News - Current

  • Information Provided for Bottomland Hardwood Collaborative Project: Wylie Barrow, USGS National Wetlands Research Center,  was contacted by Daniel Twedt,  USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Station in Vicksburg, Miss., for information to assist in a collaborative project throughout the Southeast relating harvest history and its applicability to the understanding of bottomland hardwood forests of today. Barrow provided information from the Singer Tract Historical Geodatabase, created from the Ivory-billed Woodpecker Science Support Project.  (Wylie Barrow, Lafayette, La., 337-266-8668)

Agency Work on Presidential Initiatives

  • U.S.-Vietnam Science Partnership:  During September 24-October 3, Gregory Smith, USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director, was hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam, which arranged meetings with officials from the Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.  They discussed climate change  projects and the Delta Research and Global Observation Network (DRAGON) project, as established in the Joint Statement Between the United States of America and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, released by the U.S. President and Prime Minister of Vietnam in June, 2008.  (Gregory Smith, Lafayette, La., 337-266-8501)

  • Wetland Comparisons: The USGS National Wetlands Research Center, at the request of the USGS Communications Office, is assembling comparative data on Louisiana and Florida wetlands for the Congressional Research Service. (Linda Broussard, Lafayette, La., 337-266-8692)

  • FLOW 2008:  Gabrielle Bodin (USGS National Wetlands Research Center Contractor, IAP World Services) helped with USGS exhibits, in support of Headquarters, at the Instream Flow Council’s annual conference, FLOW 2008, in San Antonio, Tex., October 6 – 9.
