Louisiana's Wetlands Are America's Wetlands: U. S. Senator
John Breaux and U. S. Representative Chris John recently visited the USGS
National Wetlands Research Center in Lafayette, LA, to discuss pending legislation
to extend the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA;
also known as the Breaux Act) into 2019. The Breaux Act was first authorized
in 1990 to provide funding for wetland restoration projects to begin combating
the annual loss of 25 to 35 square miles of Louisiana's coastal wetlands which
affects the entire nation. For over 13 years USGS scientists have provided
field and laboratory research as well as map products to help plan and monitor

Nutria Goes to Court: USGS provided information on nutria
for the Ninth Annual International Environmental Moot Court Competition to
be held Oct. 28 – 30 at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport,
FL. The competition involves teams of law students from around the world who
explore issues of international environmental law. This year's "problem"
focuses on the nutria, an invasive, wetland plant-eating rodent from South
