We are seeking Postdoctoral Fellows in the discipline of Applied Mathematics who have obtained a Ph.D. within the last three years. Candidates may compete for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates will also be considered for the J. Robert Oppenheimer, Richard P. Feynman or Frederick Reines Fellowships. The AMR Postdoctoral Program provides a means of advancing knowledge in the areas of basic and applied research and strengthening our national scientific and technical capabilities. The Postdoctoral Fellows provide valuable stimulus to the research efforts of Laboratory staff and make available the most recent developments of university science and engineering departments as well as forming communication links between the Laboratory, industry, and universities. The Laboratory experience presents appointees the opportunity to derive significant professional accomplishment and advancement of their career goals by publishing the results of their research, participating in scientific and technical conferences, and presenting seminars. Candidates are nominated and sponsored by a member of the Laboratory's technical staff. Selection is based on Laboratory-wide competition and is determined by the candidate's academic qualifications and research excellence.
Postdoctoral Fellows are provided the opportunity to pursue independent research of their own choice. Doctoral degree recipients who have received their degrees within the past three years and who are recognized in their fields, are eligible to compete for two-year, renewable for a third year, limited-term appointments. Postdoctoral Research Associates are provided the opportunity to pursue research directly involved with Laboratory programmatic efforts.
The Los Alamos AMR Program strives to attract the "best and brightest" postdoctoral candidates available. The quality of the prospective candidate, irrespective of discipline, remains the overriding consideration when evaluating the postdoctoral package. Because the Postdoctoral Program remains one of the Laboratory's primary recruitment mechanisms, we expect that high-caliber postdoctoral appointees who become regular staff members will make significant contributions to the DOE's mission-oriented programmatic efforts throughout their careers.
To be considered for a postdoc position in T-5, you must apply to the Laboratory postdoc program. We recommend that you consult the list of open positions, and the guide for preparation of application materials.
In addition, the T-5 group requests that potential postdocs send copies of their on-line application, resumé, all collegiate transcripts, one or two letters of recommendation and a statement of their research interest to the T-5 Postdoc Coordinator. (Electronic documents should be in plain text or PDF format.) The letters should address the major accomplishments of the student, the ranking of the student in relation to peers in the group, department, or field and examples of candidate's industriousness, creativity, maturity, and independence. Specific examples, such as: "she solved this long standing problem" or "he organized a symposium on his own" will help us in our evaluations.

The Applied Mathematics group organizes a highly active summer program in Mathematical Modeling and Analysis. This program is coordinated through the T-5 Group Office. Students collaborate with Laboratory Staff Members and Postdoctoral Fellows to do fundamental research. A list of our T-5 summer projects illustrates the variety of the program.
There are two different types of summer positions. The are either a regular 90-day or a 8-week or shorter assignment. These are highly competitive positions. Before being accepted into the program, students must have a Laboratory sponsor who is willing to oversee their research project (contact prior to application is extremely beneficial). The majority of the summer students in the program have already completed two years of graduate school and have an 'A' or high 'B' average. Junior graduate and undergraduate students are also considered for the program, but it is usually more difficult to find a sponsor. Also, it is usually easier to find sponsors for students who have strong computer skills (i.e. UNIX, Linux, C, C++, Fortran, Matlab, Maple, Python, etc.) than for those who do not.
