Reflections on 9/11

The 59th Medical Wing deployed four Critical Care Air Transport Teams to McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey in support of the Sept 11, 2001 tragedy at the World Trade Center, New York City and the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. The three-member team operates an intensive care unit in an aircraft cabin during flight. Air Force nurse provides medical aid to Haitian injured

Capt. Guilene Derisma visits with school children in Bocozelle, Haiti, May 30, 2011. Derisma travelled to Haiti in May 2011 with a team of U.S. military medical personnel to provide primary care, optometry, and dental services to support a population-at-risk of 300,000 people. The team cared for approximately 8,000 people in a 2-week period. Derisma is a nurse assigned to the 59th Emergency Medical Squadron, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and was born in Haiti. Anaplastologist creates ears for wounded

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Shilo Harris is fitted for prosthetic ears at the dental clinic on Joint Base San Antonio, Lackland. A wax model of the ear is first molded to ensure proper placement and fit before applying the prosthetic. The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Department at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center employs a team that deals with the rehabilitation of patients with acquired and congenital defects of the head and neck region. Robot-assisted surgery

Medical personnel look at a monitor while Lt. Col. (Dr.) Kyle Weld (right) performs a laparoscopic prostatectomy, the surgical removal of prostate cancer. Dr. Weld, staff urologist, 59th Medical Wing, was the first Air Force doctor to use a robot in surgery. The robot provides a magnified, high-definition, three-dimensional view for the physician.
