Mission:

The 59th Clinical Research Division (CRD) provides centralized administrative, technical, and scientific support and regulatory oversight and guidance to wing personnel in the development, performance and dissemination of clinical research. The CRD directly supports wing readiness and certification training requirements for residents and fellows, nurses, allied healthcare professionals, and providers.

The 59 CRD is the largest biomedical research facility in the Air Force, providing centralized administrative, scientific, and regulatory oversight and guidance to Wing personnel in the development and performance of institutional and national operational and clinical research. Available support includes protocol development, research design, bio-statistical consultation, laboratory analysis, and veterinary care. The CRD supports operational training requirements for Graduate Medical Education programs and Wing healthcare providers. Previous and ongoing research is integral to international readiness and disaster training. The CRD is divided into four branches:
Support Branch:
  • Provides regulatory oversight and ensures regulatory compliance for all human and animal research conducted at the 59 MDW and other Air Force facilities.
  • Assists investigators with protocol development, approval of research, biostatistics, and dissemination of research findings.
  • Executes the research budget.
  • Manages research and training supplies and equipment.
  • Produces posters, photographs, illustrations, and other multimedia products to disseminate research findings.
Laboratory Branch:
  • Provides human and animal laboratory support in seven major areas:
  • Chemistry - Liquid chromatographic and mass spectrometric analysis of drugs and drug metabolites, hormones, enzyme inhibitors; identification of biomarkers for disease prediction and treatment monitoring.
  • Proteomics - Surface-Enhanced Laser/Desorption Ionization (SELDI) and ion trap mass spectrometric capabilities for the identification and analysis of proteins.
  • Toxicology - State-of-the-art gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) and liquid chromatographic triple quadruple mass spectrometric instruments for the identification and quantification of trace levels of drugs, drug metabolites, and other small molecular weight compounds.
  • Hematology - Complete blood count, platelet, reticulocyte and differential, coagulation testing, platelet function, and enzyme immunoassays.
  • Molecular & Cell Biology - Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to analyze DNA and RNA for rapid field deployable diagnostics; four-color flow cytometry to quantify and measure specific cells, and cell cultures to determine proliferation and viability.
  • Microbiology - Aerobic, anaerobic, and low-shear modeled microgravity bacterial culture for epidemiology, disinfectant, proteomic, and medical readiness studies; sensitive real time PCR for the detection of bacterial and viral outbreaks.
Operations Branch:
  • Provides comprehensive animal care, surgical support and animal pathology services. Services include:
  • Three fully functioning operating suites, including microsurgical capabilities
  • Three hyperbaric/hypobaric chambers
  • Two Instron Material Testers
  • Radiology and imaging capabilities, including ultrasound, digital film, and fluoroscopy
  • 25,000 square foot vivarium
  • Paddock
  • Histopathology laboratory
