Message from the Ambassador

U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam David B. Shear

U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam David B. Shear

Thank you for visiting the website of the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi.  Promoting U.S. economic interests and creating opportunities for American businesses in Vietnam is among my top priorities as Ambassador.

Since our two countries normalized relations in 1995 we have made impressive advances in our bilateral relationship, which is based on mutual respect, growing friendship, and a sincere desire for constructive relations. Many of these advances have come in the area of trade.

December 2011 marked the 10th anniversary of the U.S.-Vietnam and investment relationship. Since the implementation of the BTA in 2001, our two-way trade has grown significantly, reaching $22 billion in 2011.

The United States and Vietnam continue to work together in multilateral fora like ASEAN, APEC, the WTO, and through our Trade and Investment Framework Agreement, to create a trade framework that is open, free, transparent, and fair.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced in an October 2011 speech on economic statecraft that “we are modernizing our agenda on trade, investment, and commercial diplomacy to deliver jobs and growth for the American people.” My Embassy is here to support you in your efforts to further advance the U.S.-Vietnam trade relationship.

Please have a look at the resources we are making available on this site.  Check out upcoming events and activities, learn more about the best American export prospects, and find out which U.S. companies are seeking Vietnamese partners or, if you are Vietnamese, what help is available if you are interested in investing in the U.S.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance.
